Let’s just get the awkward part out of the way first. Nobody tells you how much a live wedding painter costs, and it’s driving you crazy. Rightfully so. You’ve priced out a photographer, a florist, maybe a smooth jazz band, and then you get to “live wedding painter” and the internet just shrugs at you.
So, as we enter the glorious fall wedding season, let’s get into the specifics.
Fall is, hands down, one of the busiest stretches of my whole year. There’s cooler light, better color, hundreds of venues that look like a painting before my brush even meets canvas…you can see where I’m going with this. It’s a desirable season, and that raises the price. You’re getting married on a Saturday in October? So is everyone else who wants a painter, and, sadly, there’s only one of me. Now I know it’s spooky season, but I promise this isn’t me trying to scare you. This is just what happens when demand goes up but my calendar doesn’t get any bigger.
Date and season really are one of the biggest factors in what you’ll pay, right alongside canvas size, location, and how complex the composition is. None of that is a secret. I just happen to believe that couples deserve to see it laid out instead of guessing at it from a vague paragraph on someone’s website.
Okay, I know I hinted at this above, but let’s take a closer look.
First, canvas size. I have three sizes I offer, each with its own price attached. From there, it’s date and season (hello, fall) location (some places I’m driving to easily, and others require a little more planning and a lot more coffee), and complexity, meaning how much is actually happening in the painting itself. A couple wanting a quiet, simple setting with just the two of them is essentially a different job entirely from a couple wanting the whole wedding party, three dogs, and a family crest included.
I’m not going to throw exact numbers at you here because prices change, and I’ve learned the hard way that once a number is published somewhere, it tends to live on forever whether it stays accurate or not. I did an interview with a major wedding publication years ago, and my prices from that article stalked me long after I’d raised them. What I will tell you is this: budget for an investment in the thousands, not the hundreds, right alongside your photographer and your florist. Instead of a number that’ll be outdated in a year, head over to my Services page where the real, current numbers live.
I understand that a bit of sticker shock can come with the territory. But, I (gently) encourage you to not compare me to the caricature artist you saw at a corporate event or a printable you found on Etsy for $12. Those are different things doing a different job. What I’m doing is standing at your wedding for hours watching your day happen and turning it into an original piece that exists only once. There’s no reprint or template.
I think about this part a lot. At some point, the wedding industry decided that wedding photographers deserve big bucks and wedding painters should be the budget-friendly option. I have a degree in this. I have materials, paints, canvases, insurance, and more art and business education than I know what to do with, and none of that stops costing money just because “painter” may sound more like a hobby.
I used to feel strange about that, but I don’t anymore. If you’re the kind of couple that wants something spectacular made by a real person, in real time, at your wedding, that’s worth paying for the same way every other skilled vendor at your wedding is worth paying for. I’d rather be upfront about that than pretend it’s some kind of mystery you’re supposed to scramble to figure out.
One more thing worth mentioning here. Giving back is baked into how I run this business. Supporting animal rescues has been part of my mission since day one (which, I admit, often contributes to your furry family member(s) showing up in your painting, regardless of whether or not they were actually there). It’s a passion I’m proud of. So when you book me, you’re capturing your day and funding a very special drive to make a difference! It’s a win win.
Expect the numbers to be more than a Pinterest board and less than your floral budget, and expect them to move depending on the season, the size, and what you want captured. Fall couples specifically should expect their date to be a big part of the conversation. Busy months come with their own math.
And remember, if you want to see specific numbers, head over to my Services page. No guesswork here. If you have any questions about how this all applies to your wedding, reach out so we can discuss it directly instead of you trying to reverse engineer a price from old blog posts and weirdly cryptic website bios.
